About

The Premier Queen’s University Belfast Society

Established in 1850 by E.L. Godkin, The Literary & Scientific Society (affectionately known as The Literific) holds the distinction of being the oldest student society at Queen’s University Belfast. For over 170 years, we have remained the leading QUB society for intellectual discourse and the undisputed paragon of free speech in Northern Ireland.

A Legacy of Debate at Queen’s

As the first Queen’s society, our history is woven into the fabric of the university itself. From our Victorian roots to our modern-day influence, The Literific has shaped the voices of generations of students. Today, we continue this tradition by hosting weekly debates every Thursday evening during term-time, alongside prestigious special events and social gatherings.
